Hi All,
I initially had thought that this project would be much easier than it was. I think my biggest challenge, was that I wanted to be the person who adds a large amount of crucial details to a Wikipedia pages, and then I'd feel like my contribution was well worth it. Unfortunately, I had a hard time finding inspiration, because I feel like I don't know enough about feminism and technology as some of my peers do. Therefore, I was discouraged to add my own thoughts and research. Luckily for me, we were given the freedom to edit any page we wanted. I'm a runner, and it was actually my New Year's Resolution for 2014 to do at least one 5K run a month. That being said, I noticed that my next 5K for May is the Run or Dye 5K. It's very similar to other colorful runs such as Color Me Rad, The Color Run, etc., and so I decided that I wanted to research the inspiration behind those specific types of runs.
I quickly found the Wiki page for the Color Run, and noticed that although there was a decent amount of info concerning what the run is, there was no info on why the run is structured the way that it is. I did some research around the internet, and found that runs involving colored powder are actually inspired by the Hindu festival of Holi . I didn't contribute too much, but I felt that it was important to include the history behind why runners throw the colored powder around, and knowing that I was able to help make a page look more complete is actually pretty rewarding! Now that I've found a topic of interest for me on Wikipedia, it's very possible that I may add more to this page, or even create new pages for the other colorful runs that do not have a Wikipedia page yet! Enjoy! My Wiki Page
Hi Chelsea, that is a significant and helpful edit. Nice work! I appreciated learning about this run, and about the Holi festival too.
ReplyDeleteI never knew this much about the color run! Thanks for your contribution!
ReplyDeleteWow! Not only did the main impact of your edits persist but also other Wikipedians came in and reorganized the entire article to emphasize the "why" that you identified about Holi. Notice how the article now begins (with Holi rather than just statement of a 5K sporting event) thanks to the collaborative efforts of those who appreciated the information you added.
